It’s hard to believe sometimes how federal judges out there can let people who have done horrible things just walk out the door. Then, you see other judges becoming activists and stopping Trump from doing things they don’t like even though he has every right to do them. You also have judges out there who throw the book at people for having a joint which seems a little counterproductive.
The justice system can be extremely frustrating for a variety of reasons.
You’d probably expect that all judges could agree that a teacher performing oral sex on a 14-year-old student in school is something that would get you in a lot of trouble. Perhaps jail time?
Well, not in New York. In New York, you just get probation.
From The Daily Wire:
A high school teacher in the Bronx who admitted performing oral sex on a 14-year-old student was only sentenced to 10 years’ probation and allowed to keep her teaching certificate. The teacher reportedly performed the act multiple times.
On Wednesday, the court labeled her a Level 1 sex offender, but the plea agreement that was struck jettisoned prosecutors’ request for a minimum of two years in prison.
As part of her plea agreement, Myers also got to keep her teaching certificate. Lucian Chalfen, a spokesman for the state Office of Court Administration, stated, “Each case is decided on its own merits. Whatever the negotiated plea entailed, all parties agreed to it.”
Obviously, if the gender roles were reversed here this would be national news story. It does make some sense that the two are treated differently but at the same time it shouldn’t.
You have to imagine that most parents send their students to high school expecting that the teachers aren’t going to be performing oral sex on them regardless of how consensual it is.
She lost her job and will have to register as a sex offender which is good. However, no jail time seems a little weird when you consider the fact a male teacher would probably go to prison for a long time if he did a similar thing.
