The Democratic Party in Virginia seems to be imploding as its top politicians in the state are caught up in a variety of scandals.
First it was Gov. Ralph Northam’s comments that many thought approved infanticide. Then came his yearbook with a photo in blackface and a KKK hood.
Then his Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax was hit with sexual assault allegations from 2004. Vanessa Tyson, a professor, says that he forced her to give him oral sex. Fairfax denies the charges.
On Wednesday, AG Mark Herring, the next in succession then admitted that he too had worn blackface at a party in the 1980s. This was especially problematic because he’d already called for Northam to resign for the yearbook photo and said he could no longer run the state.
Now there’s a fourth Virginia politician whose name has entered into the matter.
From Daily Wire:
ABC News reports that Rep. Bobby Scott (D-VA) was made aware of the allegations directly from Fairfax’s accuser, Dr. Vanessa Tyson, “who on Wednesday released a statement detailing the alleged 2004 assault, which took place at the Democratic National Convention in Boston.”
“Allegations of sexual assault need to be taken seriously,” Scott said in a statement to ABC News. “I have known Professor Tyson for approximately a decade and she is a friend. She deserves the opportunity to have her story heard.”
Aides to Scott told ABC News that Tyson told Scott on October 20, 2017 that she was “not a fan” of Fairfax, who at the time was a candidate for Virginia Lieutenant Governor.
The following month, Tyson continued to disclose her dislike for Fairfax to Scott and told Scott that she wanted to “talk about it” with him.
In December 2017, Tyson allegedly told Scott that Fairfax had a “MeToo allegation,” and over the next month, Scott’s aides learned that Tyson was the alleged victim.
Dr. Tyson also told the Washington Post about the attack but they did not run with it because they said they could not corroborate the claim.
Tyson released the details of the attack on Wednesday:
And while Scott is saying that Tyson should be heard now, he didn’t come forward with her allegation before, demand that she be heard or call out Fairfax publicly.
But Scott had no problem calling out Brett Kavanaugh when he, Scott, didn’t know the facts and when there wasn’t any corroboration in the case.
Ironically, Tyson has now hired the law firm that Dr. Christine Blasey Ford used and Fairfax has hired the law firm which Justice Brett Kavanaugh used.
