Caught between a rock and a hard place, Democrats are now forced to follow what President Trump is telling them to do or stand opposed to Democrat Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s Green New Deal.
Trump trapped Democrats in the conundrum when he told them to endorse the proposal to combat climate change, as the Daily Caller reports.
“I think it is very important for the Democrats to press forward with their Green New Deal,” Trump said in a tweet on Saturday evening. “It would be great for the so-called ‘Carbon Footprint’ to permanently eliminate all Planes, Cars, Cows, Oil, Gas & the Military – even if no other country would do the same. Brilliant!”
Clearly, the president is trolling but he is still setting Democrats up for endorsing the plan or choosing to stand opposed to it.
From the Daily Caller:
Ocasio-Cortez released her highly-anticipated Green New Deal resolution Thursday. Massachusetts Senator Ed Markey released a companion bill in the Senate, and both versions were sponsored by Democratic lawmakers eyeing a 2020 presidential bid.
The Green New Deal bill calls for “10-year national mobilizations” to fight global warming by pushing “clean, renewable, and zero-emission energy sources” and “dramatically expanding and upgrading existing renewable power sources.”
Ocasio-Cortez’s non-binding resolution also calls for drastically expanding the welfare state, including “a family-sustaining wage, adequate family and medical leave, paid vacations and retirement security” and “high-quality health care” benefits for Americans.
Most Democratic candidates who have announced bids for the 2020 presidential race have signed on as co-sponsors of the plan, or have otherwise endorsed it.
The Daily Caller reports the proposal is a “litmus test” for those running for the presidency, something Republicans are already using to their advantage.
As a Washington Examiner op-ed reports, “every important 2020 presidential candidate in the Democratic Party is backing the proposal.”
This includes Senators Kamala Harris, Elizabeth Warren, Cory Booker, and Kirsten Gillibrand. Senator Bernie Sanders has also endorsed the proposal but has not yet announced his 2020 plans.
Here’s more from the opinion editorial:
Sure, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., has all but dismissed the multi-trillion dollar progressive pet project. But it’s quite otherwise with the entire Democratic presidential field. Without so much as a complete draft of the GND, politicians who are otherwise considered serious people have wholeheartedly endorsed a bill that expects to rid the U.S. of carbon emissions in 10 years, whose real cost would surely run in the tens of trillions of dollars.
Ocasio-Cortez says she’ll use “Modern Monetary Theory” to pay for it, otherwise known as printing more money from the Treasury money tree. It’s actually that stupid, and they’re all backing it, and they all want to be president. It’s not an obsession, it’s a reality that can’t be ignored.
With the exception of Sanders and Klobuchar, whose presidential campaigns are not yet technically official, every single one of the senators listed above are serious contenders for the Democratic nomination. In nearly every poll, Sanders comes in second, only to former Vice President Joe Biden, and Harris and Booker round out the top five.
