2020 presidential candidate Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) had a rather embarrassing moment while trying to kick off his campaign in the vitally important state of Iowa.
An cringeworthy exchange he had with a radio reporter was reported by CNN executive producer David Galles.
First he appeared to think that a Swiss reporter was Spanish and responded in Spanish to the reporter.
Second, his response was not the correct Spanish. He responded “Tu hablo espanol, Si?” The correct grammatical usage with someone with whom you were not familiar would be “Habla usted Espanol?”
But when the reporter said he was from Swiss radio, Booker said, “Swiss! Yeah, I do not speak Swiss. (Laugh) I cannot even say ‘Swiss cheese’ in Swiss,” Mr. Booker said, according to Mr. Galles’s transcription.
This is, of course, no “Swiss language” – people in Switzerland speak four different languages, German, French, Italian and Romansh.
Needless to say, the transcribed exchange earned a lot of chuckles on Twitter.
